Abstract

The paper reviews the surgical management in 28 cases of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media which remained moist inspite of conservative treatment and eradication of septic foci in the nose, paranasal sinuses and pharynx.

Myringoplasties, with the use of ventilating polyethylene tube placed in the mastoid antrum or the middle ear, were done. The tube acted as a drainage tube in the early post-operative period and later on as a ventilation tube for the middle ear cleft.

The technique has proved useful not only in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media with central moist perforations but also in moist ears following modified radical mastoidectomies and failed myringoplasties which were taken up for a revision operation.

The post operative assessment of these patients showed that in 19 out of 23 cases with a central moist perforation, there was complete healing and satisfactory hearing improvement.
