Abstract

11 adult mongrel dogs underwent fresh homograft tracheal transplantation without immunosuppression and without an internal or external stent. Ten dogs died between 6 and 25 days due to tracheal obstruction. One dog survived for 328 days with a well preserved graft. This case illustrates that tracheal transplantation can succeed, if early liquefaction and absorption of the cartilage, possibly due to ischaemia, could be prevented.
