Abstract

Puberty dysphonia is a common problem faced by E.N.T. Surgeons. 25 cases of puberty voice disorder (around the age group 14–20 years) were selected for aetiological study during the year 1971–1975. The case history including age of onset, type of voice, behaviour pattern, family background and family attachments were enquired into and recorded. A thorough clinical examination, including examination of the secondary sexual characters, endocrinal system and other investigations was carried out and we were able to come to definite aetiological diagnosis. Two groups of voice disorder cases were found (1) Dysphonia of glandular dysfunction (subclinical thyroid deficiency) and (2) Mutational falsetto voice where there was no endocrinal disorder.

The first group of cases were treated by the endocrinologist and the voice improved in 6 months to 1 year’s time and the second group of cases were treated by the Speech Therapist and the improvement was remarkable.
