Abstract
Carcinoma of the oesophagus is the commonest malignant tumour encountered in Kashmir. It accounts for 22% of the malignant tumours that are seen at the S.M.H.S. Hospital Srinagar (Matto and Kaul 1974. During the five year period of 1970–75 four hundred and eighty eight new cases of oesophageal cancer were diagnosed.
The incidence of carcinoma of the oesophagus varies from country to country and also from one region to another within the same country. The incidence is high in Africa, Australia, Finland, France, Germany and Japan and low in Canada, Denmark and Scandinavian countries, and the U.S.A. (Case, 1961). In India a high incidence of oesophageal cancer has been reported from the western part of the country (Paymaster et. al. 1968 and Jussawala et. al. 1968). These variations indicate some local factors in its etiology.
