Summary
The extraordinarily rich fossil flora of calcareous algae in Yugoslavia, as well as some recently published data, enabled the authors to establish parallel tendencies in the evolution of the Dasycladaceae. In various phylogenetic lines the same shape of the skeleton has been found (e. g. resembling a string of pearls, mushroom-shaped, a handle with a spheroidal head, etc.), then the bowl-shaped or inner annulation (intusannulation), the several times repeated occurrence of the euspondylity and metaspondylity, respectively (in the Paleozoic and again in the Mesozoic), the variability in the shape of branches, as well as fissured and prominent tubular envelopes around the branches, etc.
An example for convergent evolution is provided by the genusVelebitella during Upper Carboniferous and Permian time when its species became similar to a PermianDiplopora.
The main development of the Dasycladaceae took place already in the Paleozoic. The differentiation between certain genera imposes considerable taxonomical and nomenclatorial problems. The repeated occurrence of certain significant features within the different evolutionary lines proves the close genetic relationship of the whole family.
