-
I.
Summary
In the past seven years, several hundred fossils have been collected from the Precambrian Nama system in South West Africa. Most of the finds have been preserved in a three dimensional form. Nearly all of them belong to the phylum PetalonamaePflug 1970. The variety of specimens identified can be divided into two main divisions:
-
I.
Dendroidic division: Stock-like bodies composed of two fan-shaped branching systems (flabella). The branches of the flabella are modified to form the walls of a secondary hollow system (plate 12 fig. a, text-fig. 3b).
-
II.
Corpus-forming division: An advanced form of the dendroidic division characterized by unification of the flabella to form a corpus which encloses a cavity. This cavitiy may be divided or undivided (plate 13, text-fig. 2d).
Most of the finds belong to the division II. The systematic classification of division II is based on the following criteria: a) shape of the body: «monaxial» or «bifurcat»; b) structure of the body wall: «rangeoid», «pteridinoid», or «erniettoid»; c) position of the ingestion aperture: «truncostom», «terminostom», «centrostom», or «apicostom»; d) transversal and longitudinal division of the body: three parts are visible, two parts are present or the body appears to be undivided.
