Abstract
12 neoselachian teeth from the Early and Middle Jurassic (Toarcian to Callovian) of northwest Germany are described. One tooth shows affinity to the Jurassic family Protospinacidae (superorder Squalomorphii ?), while the others belong to the order Orectolobiformes (superorder Galeomorphii). The material comprises the following:Protospinax ? sp.,Palaeobrachaelurus sp. 1,Palaeobrachaelurus sp. 2,Paraginglymostoma ? sp.,Palaeorhincodon ? sp.,Annea carinata Thies 1993,Annea sp. andMesiteia ? sp. The generaParaginglymostoma, Palaeorhincodon andMesiteia are otherwise known only from the Cretaceous and Tertiary respectively. One tooth of clearly orectolobiform affinity does not match the dental morphology of any living or fossil genus of nurse sharks and is assigned to the Orectolobiformes inc. fam., gen. et sp. The present material confirms the validity of the Jurassic orectolobiform genusAnnea Thies 1983. The generic diagnosis ofAnnea and the specific diagnosis of Acarinata Thies 1983 are revised. In conjunction with already published records the fauna demonstrates the high diversity of Jurassic nurse sharks. It is shown that the Orectolobiformes played the dominant role in the Jurassic evolution of the Galeomorphii.
