Abstract
Schrammen (1899) based his description ofCymatosaurus gracilis on two specimens. His second specimen was previously located at the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Stuttgart, and selected as neotype forCymatosaurus latifrons, in order to establish objective synonymy ofCymatosaurus gracilis with the latter species. Originally believed to have been lost, the first specimen ofSchrammen (1899) has now surfaced in the Berliner Außenstelle der Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe. It is described in detail, as it adds to the previously known range of variation of skull characteristics inCymatosaurus latifrons. Extensive variation of cranial characters prevent a diagnosis ofCymatosaurus latifrons on the basis of homology (autapomorphy), which therefore has to be treated as a metaspecies.
