Summary

The immunity of Multani cotton (a variety ofGossypium arboreum racebengalense) toBact. malvacearum is shown to depend on a major gene,B 4, accompanied by a strong complex of minor genes. No such strong complex has ever been found in cottons of immediate New World origin. From this and other data, it is argued that the cottons of India have undergone a strong selection pressure fromBact. malvacearum for longer than the cottons of the New World, and it is suggested that this disease originated in the Old World—probably in India.
