The contribution of the deep sea drilling project to foraminiferal research

Abstract

The American Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) with the deep-sea drilling vessel “Glomar Challenger” so far cored about 34 000 meters of sediment at more than 360 drilling sites in the world oceans. This resulted in a wealth of data and new concepts not only in the field of global tectonics but also in biostratigraphy and paleontology. The knowledge of foraminifera as well as of calcareous nannofossils and siliceous organisms has been considerably improved.

A general view is shown in Table 1 on all fossil groups described in the first 26 volumes of the Initial Reports DSDP from deep sea drilling cores, together with their authors as well as the geographical area and the oldest dated sediments of the leg.

The project yielded important new ideas in the fields of evolution and taxonomy of foraminifera as well as on the importance of “instantaneous paleontological events” for biostratigraphical dating. Cool and cold periods are shown to be followed by an increased evolution, and taxonomic characteristics to be dependant on water temperature. When transferring the zonation based on planktonic foraminifera into cooler climatic areas remarkable difficulties were noted as the zonation had been merely established in tropical climatic areas. The first indications of climatic zonation were noticed during the Eocene/Oligocene. Benthonic foraminifera in foraminiferal associations of deep ocean basins were only involved by about 1 per cent during the Neogene and Quaternary. Benthonic foraminifera of the Paleogene and Mesozoic are far more important for biostratigraphy and paleogeography.

A complete list is given of the papers published on foraminifera in vols. 1–26 of the Initial Reports DSDP.
