Studies on the variation of polyhusks in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Summary

It has been frequently found both in the varieties and in the progenies of hybrids that in addition to the normal lemma and palea some extra lemma-like husks are present on either or both sides of the spikelet. This abnormality is called polyhusks. The inheritance of the character has been reported in a previous paper (Kuanget al. 1943), and here the variation of its manifestation and its secondary effect upon the spikelets which bear the extra husks are described and discussed in detail.

The percentage of the polyhusked spikelets on a spike varies widely. It varies with the type of rice (Indica and Japonica), varieties and years. The most significant difference exists between the Indica and Japonica types of varieties. The bearing of this fact on the evolution of these two types is discussed.

The presence of the extra husks has a great influence upon fertility. The year has some influence upon the fertility of both normal and polyhusked spikelets of the polyhusked plant. The presence of other abnormalities such as multiple-seeds, twin-grain, polyflorets, extra veins on lemma and palea, etc. on the polyhusked plant may be regarded as secondary effects of the polyhusks genes.

The character polyhusks is treated here as a case of atavism. From this viewpoint the taxonomic position of the genusOryza is discussed.
