Abstract
The formation of the shell spiral in ammonites is traced back to the effect of weight and buoyancy forces in conjunction with a gastropod-like position of the shell, supposing a vagile benthic mode of life. The downward pull required to maintain this shell position leads to a differentiated attachment of the adhesive muscles to the shell wall as a reaction to the steady tensile stress caused by the weight and buoyancy forces. The form of the stressed subephithelial muscles and of the rear section of the mantle becomes manifest in the form of septa.
