The effect of cisapride on the duration and side effects of whole-gut irrigation for colonoscopy

Résumé

L’effet de l’usage prophylactique du cisapride, une nouvelle médication prokinétique gastrointestinale, a été étudié chez des patients subissant une irrigation intestinale totale avec une solution électrolytique en vue de la préparation à la coloscopie.

Quatre-vingt-sept patients ont été répartis de façon randomisée, recevant soit cisapride 10 mg deux fois par jour ou un placebo au cours des quatre jours précédant le lavage intestinal. Le cisapride a réduit de façon significative l’intervalle entre les débuts de la préparation et la première défécation, mais n’a pas eu d’effet ultérieur sur la durée totale du lavage intestinal. Nous n’avons pas observé de réduction significative des effets secondaires. Un nettoyage excellent ou bon a été obtenu chez 92 % des patients dans les deux groupes.

Summary

The effect of prophylactic use of cisapride, a newly developed gastrointestinal prokinetic drug, was studied in patients undergoing whole-gut irrigation in preparation for colonoscopy using a balanced electrolyte solution. Eighty-seven patients were randomly assigned to either cisapride 10 mg t.i.d. or placebo during four days prior to total gut lavage. Cisapride significantly reduced the interval from the start of the procedure to the first defecation, but had no further effect on the total duration of the lavage. A statistically signifiant reduction of side effects was not obtained. An excellent or good cleansing result was obtained in 92 % of the cases in both groups.

Resumen

Se estudia el efecto del empleo profiláctico del cisapride, un nuevo fármaco proquinético gastrointestinal, en pacientes sometidos a irrigación intestinal total con una solución hidroelectrolitica equilibrada como preparación para colonoscopia.

Se repartieron 87 pacientes de modo randomizado, que recibieron, respectivamente, cisapride 10 mg, dos veces al día o un placebo; todo ello en los cuatro dias previos al lavado intestinal. El cisapride redujo significativamente el intervalo entre inicio de la prepración y primera defecación, pero no tuvo efecto ulterior en la duración total del lavado intestinal. No hemos observado reducción significativa de los efectos secundarios. Se logró una limpieza excelente o buena en un 92 % de pacientes en ambos grupos.
