A note on Reeve’s method for estimating heritability with assortative mating

  • Published:
Journal of Genetics Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

A modification is presented of Reeve’s (1953) method of estimating heritability from progeny tests when the parents are selected and mated assortatively.

Unlike Reeve’s method, the method presented eliminates the unnecessary assumption that the environmental variances of the parent and offspring generations are equal.

Also, by this method the environmental variances in the parent and offspring generations can be evaluated separately for comparison.

An example of the application of this estimate of heritability to wing length inDrosophila melanogaster is also presented.
