Fertility in the genusBrassica

Summary

  1. 1.

The paper deals with the cross-and self-fertility of certain forms of the genusBrassica.

  2. 2.

It is shown that “rogue” production between two commercial crops depends on the amount of pollen of one incident on the aggregate stigmatic area of the other and a “constant” applicable to the relationship under consideration.

  3. 3.

The “constant” is shown to be the resultant of the self-compatibility of the one crop and the cross-compatibility which exists between the two.

  4. 4.

The value of the two components of the “constant” is shown to depend upon, and largely to be controlled by, the environment.

  5. 5.

Relationships involving variousBrassicae which might lead to valuable recombinations are discussed.

  6. 6.

Weakened vegetative vigour following on weak fertility vigour andvice versa are noted and discussed.
