The problem of tracing the habit characters which are the subject of this study to their genetic causes is clearly no small one, and much time and patience are required for its final solution. Many more years must pass before the work on these and other characters (either in progress or in contemplation) can be completed.

Causal morphology is like a great edifice, which requires many types of both builders and building materials. The work in genetics promises to provide abundant materials. Individual workers can provide but little;—collective and co-ordinated effort, however, will certainly secure much.

The present contribution, it is hoped, will furnish at least one stone towards the erection of a stable foundation—a stone which, if small, will nevertheless be at least serviceable and durable.
