Summary
-
(1)
A case of unusual position of the stomach has been described showing
-
(2)
Shortness of the oesophagus, ending at the level of the 9th dorsal vertebra, and a recessus retromediastinalis phrenico-peritonealis.
-
(3)
The stomach lies partially above the level of the diaphragm and is held by mesenteries in a
-
(4)
sac-like peritoneum lined protrusion of the diaphragm.
-
(5)
The sac is bounded below by the crura.
-
(6)
The sac contains muscle above continuous with that of the oesophagus, and a little muscle below continuous with that of the diaphragmatic crura.
-
(7)
It is suggested, that the condition is primarily due to shortness of the oesophagus, the peritoneal extension being produced in part by the persistence of the right recessus pneumato-entericus, and in part by enlargement of the hiatus œsophageus and the stretching of its tissue over a relatively slowly descending stomach, with the formation of a secondary peritoneal pouch.
