Flow cytometry as an adjunct to bronchiolo-alveolar lavage

  • Published:
Acta Endoscopica

Summary

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a widely used method to asess alveolitis in various respiratory disorders and mainly in the interstitial lung diseases. Flow cytometry allowed immunophenotyping of lymphocytes and monocytes subsets, identification of micro-organisms and quantification of tumoral cells DNA content. This technique needs to be validate but may represent a useful complement in the BAL fluids analysis and have specific interrest in lung immunopathology and assessment of the respiratory events following a lung transplantation.
