Summary
Immunocytochemistry represents one of the major recent advances in histopathology. Since the introduction of a large number of monoclonal antibodies suitable for use on fixed tissues, it has become extremely useful in routine pathological diagnosis, and particularly in gastrointestinal pathology. Its major contribution is to tumour diagnosis, including the characterisation of undifferentiated tumours, the diagnosis and phenotyping of lymphoid infiltrates, the investigation of metastases, cell proliferation and oncogene expression. It can also be helpful in areas other than neoplasia, in the study of cell populations and in demonstrating viruses.
