Complications of topical anesthesia of the pharynx before upper digestive endoscopy

  • Published:
Acta Endoscopica

Summary

The topical anaesthesia of the pharynx before upper digestive endoscopies is usually performed by most of the endoscopists in view to improve comfort and quality of the examination.

Until now, no study have assessed the usefulness of this practice.

Moreover it can involve potentially serious undesirable effects that we re-examine in detail, in the light of the pharmacological data.

We compare the topical anaesthetic drugs usually employed and propose recommendations in order to prevent and to treat the complications.
