Cytokines in ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease

Summary

Activation of immune cells, especially macrophages and lymphocytes, releases a series of soluble factors (cytokines) which act on neighbouring cells to control differentiation, activation and proliferation. One hypothesis for the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease could be that abnormal release of cytokines might result in disordered immunoregulation.
