Summary
From the 1st January 1963 to the 31st december 1989, 189 patients who had ingested a caustic product were treated by the ENT service of the CHUV. All of the patients underwent an oesogastroscopy. More than 30 % of them showed caustic oesophagitis without associated bucco, pharyngeal or laryngeal lesions. 58 cases ended up having oesophageal stenosis, 30 being surgically treated and 28 being given dilatation treatment. The latter gave good results when the stenoses were short, single and proximal.
