Summary

Barrett’s columnar mucosa is characterized by a wide variation in histopathologic appearance either in one patient or among different patients. This variation leeds to a mosaic of mucosal and cellular types with metaplaslic features. In addition to the mosaic pattern, a disordered architecture characterized by an irregular surface and the irregular distribution of glands and pits is also common. The diagnosis however depends also on the anatomic site from which the columnar-lined specimen was obtained. Therefore a close collaboration between the pathologist and the gastroenterologist is needed.
