Summary

The author presents a review of the principles and recent contribution of mucin histochemistry to the study and diagnosis of precancerous lesions of the gastric mucosa. The current histochemical methods for mucin identification are assessed. The relevant aspects of the mucin profile found in intestinal metaplasia, Barrett’s oesophagus, gastric stump and adenomatous polyps are described. Possible correlations between mucin histochemistry and certain clinico-pathological features of these precancerous lesions are discussed.
