Clinical application of quantitative classification of esophagitis by means of computerised image processing

Summary

Digital processing of video-endoscopic images in esophagitis appears to be a useful method for quantifying mucosal colour changes with a potential to provide us with a more objective new classification of esophagitis. The method was tested in twenty cases with simple as well as more intricate pattern of pathological mucosa in the esophagus. The quantitative classification was possible in all examined cases of esophagitis.

The method has a high degree of reproducibility, it is not observer dependent.

The potential sources of errors as type of equipment, the distance of the tip of the endoscope to the cardia / area of interest and axial positioning of the endoscope in the esophagus must, however be taken into account.
