Cosmic rays in the earth’s magnetic field

Observations of cosmic ray intensities at places where there are large surface magnetic field anomalies suggest that discrepancies between measured cosmic ray intensities and intensities predicted by Lemaitre-Vallarta theory for the motion of charged particles in a dipole field, arise because of differences between the earth’s real field and the eccentric dipole approximation to it, rather than because of a distortion of the earth’s outer magnetic field.
