Endoscopic sphincterotomy

Summary

The experience with endoscopic retrograde sphincterotomy (ERS) in one unit is described. ERS was attempted in 65 patients with extra hepatic obstruction of the biliary duct system and was successfully performed in 53 patients. Fifty of the successful group had choledocholithiasis and stone clearance was complete in 47 of these. Eleven patients required more than one endoscopic procedure to achieve clearance. Nineteen patients had intact gallbladders and were considered unfit for surgery, the symptomatic or palliative approach offered by ERS was often the only therapeutic option available.

Details of the complication rate of 12% and the mortality of 3.5% in the generally elderly group treated are given.
