Summary
1. Two cases of ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus are reported and described. These were the first cases operated upon in Ireland.
2. The surgical technique employed is described, in which the use of a thrombosing solution in dissection of areolar tissue was found to be useful. A malleable aneurysm needle (designed by the author) was of assistance in passing ligatures around the ductus.
3. Early (24 hours) re-canalization of the ligated ductus is suggested in the first patient, whose subsequent history confirms the occurrence of re-canalization.
4. The second patient (an adult) made a perfect recovery, following ligation and the use of cellophane.
