Caesarean section in Dublin

Summary

1. 2,273 primary and repeat Cæsarean sections (including Cæsarean hysterectomy) performed in the three Dublin Lying-in Hospitals are analysed.

2. Primary section (1415) is considered under the headings of indications, maternal mortality, fœtal mortality and operative and post-operative complications. Short commentaries on the indications, reduction of maternal and fœtal mortality, reduction of Cæsarean section rate, Cæsarean hysterectomy and vaginal delivery after previous section are appended.

3. Repeat section (858) is considered under similar headings. A short note on the difficulties and complications in the operation is added.

4. Concluding remarks with a plea for conservatism in obstetrics.
