The effect of oral ammonium chloride on the urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium and sodium in man

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1968-1970)

Summary

The effect of a single oral dose of ammonium chloride on urinary calcium, magnesium and sodium, has been studied.

A significant increase in the urine values of all three cations was observed on the day of the ammonium chloride administration. A significant increase in urine calcium persisted on the next day. A significant positive correlation was observed between urinary calcium and urinary magnesium on the 3 days of the test.

In order that falsely elevated values should not be obtained, twenty-four hour urine calcium estimations should not be carried out for at least 48 hours following an ammonium chloride acid load.
