The pre-leukaemic state

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

  1. 1.

Two cases are described in which acute myeloblastic leukaemia was preceded by a pre-leukaemic phase of five and a half and ten years respectively during which there was no haematological evidence of leukaemia.

  2. 2.

In the second case a remission of seven and a half years occurred during the pre-leukaemic phase.

  3. 3.

Immediately prior to the development of the leukaemia in the second case ring sideroblasts were detected in the bone marrow and a raised level of foetal haemoglobin in the peripheral blood.

  4. 4.

In both cases the leukaemic phase progressed rapidly to a fatal termination.
