summary
It was postulated that an association exists between hypertension and affective disorder in the elderly. Physical and mental status data of 100 randomly selected mental hospital admissions aged 60 years and over were examined.
Hypertension (diastolic blood pressure greater than 105 mms. of mercury) was found to occur significantly more often in patients with affective disorders than in all other patients. This could not be accounted for by age and sex differences, or the influences of sex-biased physical incapacity, cerebral arteriosclerosis and obesity.
Possible explanations for this finding are discussed.
A definitive prospective study is planned.
