Techniques used in investigating the anatomy of the bronchial tree and pulmonary blood vessels

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

The various technical methods used in investigating the anatomy of the bronchial tree and pulmonary blood vessels are briefly reviewed.

A detailed account of the author’s method is given. In this the bronchial tree is injected with fusible metal from a closed brass container, the metal is heated in a water bath built into the container, and is driven into the lungs by compressed air, the apparatus working on the principle of the Woulfe bottle.

A method is also described whereby triple injections may be made; that is, injections of the bronchial tree with fusible metal and of the pulmonary vessels with red and blue celloidin, the celloidin being injected from filtration flasks by compressed air.

The apparatus used for single and multiple injections is described in detail.
