Sensory fibres in the superior oblique muscle and IV cranial nerve in the pig

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

  1. (1)

The innervation of the superior oblique muscle in the pig is described.

  2. (2)

Muscle spindles of standard type are confirmed in this muscle, and special attention is drawn to the pattern of the nerve fibres on the periphery.

  3. (3)

A connection between the mesencephalic root of the V nerve and the IV nerve in the pig is reported. It is suggested that in this animal the peripheral processes of certain first order sensory cells in the mesencephalic nucleus of the V nerve join the root at its decussation and travel in it to the superior oblique muscle.
