Thyrotoxic confusional state: A report of four cases

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

Four cases of toxic confusional state due to thyrotoxicosis are described. Attention is drawn to the serious significance of the development of more severe mental disturbance in thyrotoxicosis. Myopathie weakness was present in all four and there was bulbar involvement in three. The difficulties and hazards of diagnosis, particularly in the apathetic type of hyperthyroidism, are discussed. The confusional disturbance seems possibly related to liver dysfunction. Some points regarding treatment are discussed.
