Abstract

Though the irrigation facilities have increased considerably in the recent past yet 12 percent of the cane area in U.P. still remains rainfed while 40% gets only protective irrigation by way of canal and wells etc. It was with this view that the research projects on sugarcane cultivated under rainfed and deficient irrigation conditions were taken up separately at the U.P. Council of sugarcane Research institutes at Shahjahanpur and Seorahi (Kushinagar) and sub-stations at Golagokarannath (Kheri), Kashipur (Udham Singh Nagar) and Muzaffarnagar during 1974–75 to 19981974–99 seasons. Under both the conditions cultivars and technology for increased quality cane production were developed which have been summarized in the note along with future lines for research.
