Abstract

The economic losses caused by stemborers in chewing cane was studied at the experimental field of National Cereals Research institute, Edozhigi in Niger State (Lat. 9° 45° and Long. 6°07E). Four species of stermborers (Chilo zacconius Blesz., Diopsis thoracica Westw, Sesamia calamistis Hampand Mythimna sp. were identified attacking chewing canes (Saccharum officinarum L.) at various stages of growth. C.zacconious was the most prevalent pest throughout the year. Field infestation was as high as 23.7% resulting about 30.8% loss of expected income, amounting to ₦27, 640.00/ha. This huge loss in income by local farmers emphasises the need to urgently formulate effective control measures against stem borer attack.
