Polymyalgia rheumatica

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

The features are described of polymyalgia rheumatica, a myalgic syndrome affecting the girdle muscles of middle-aged, or elderly patients. The differential diagnosis is discussed, points of similarity and difference between it and a common form of polymyositis are emphasised, and a ease history is presented.

The difficulty in power assessment of painful muscles is mentioned and the possibility of a geographical or racial variation in the incidence of polymyalgia rheumatica is conjectured.
