The use of buccal “pitocin” for the induction of labour

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary and Conclusions

The various methods of administering oxytocic drugs are discussed and the dangers noted.

A clinical trial of a new Pitocin preparation (Pitocin Citrate tablet) is described.

A high incidence of complications was noted.

The tablets are as effective as “ Pitocin drips ” in stimulating uterine contractions and these may be readily stopped by removing the tablets.

With careful selection, induction of labour will be successful in a high proportion of patients.

The tablets should not be given to induce labour in patients previously delivered by Caesarean section.

The cost of the tablets is high.

Pitocin tablets are another powerful drug in the armamenterium of the obstetrician. They should be used with caution. With his present experience the writer cannot recommend their widesprad use in any of the schemes of dosage at present advocated.
