Abstract

In India sugarcane chopper harvesters arc being introduced in the state of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Large - scale testing of chopper harvester was done in Baramati (MH) and Erode (TN). The net cane out put of the harvester was 29.35 and 23.9 tones/h with an operating speed of 4.45 and 4.07 km/h. Fuel consumption was observed 26 and 27 l/h at Erode and Baramati, respectively. The field capacity and efficiency were observed as 0.30 ha/h and 44.44% at Erode and 0.24 ha/h 39.35% at Baramati. The mean billet length was 24.55 ± 1.26 and 27.08 ± 0.72 cm at Erode and Baramati, respectively. At Erode and Baramati, it was observed that 1.71 (2.11% of Net Cane) and 1.76 (1.82% of Net Cane) tones billets were left out in one ha area respectively. The cost of harvesting was calculated Rs. 157.22 and 194.15 per tonne at Erode and Baramati, respectively. In manual harvesting system 990 and 850 man hours per ha were observed along with prevailing harvesting rates of Rs 125 - 130 and Rs 75 (with other facilities) per tone with cane loss of 2 tones per ha in the form of stubbles left in the field after harvesting at Erode and Baramati, respectively.
