Environmental pollution and its management in sugar industry in India: An appraisal

Abstract

The liquid and gaseous effluents produced from sugar industry have adverse impact on ecosystem and environment due to their high BOD load and toxic constituents. In order to reduce pollution hazards, industry is implementing environment management system (EMS) to improve economic and environmental performance of sugar processing unit. A new international EMS standards ISO 14001 is also discussed.
