Summary

Torsion of the gall-bladder is a rare emergency most common in elderly women.

The condition is restricted to gall-bladders which possess a mesentery, or a mesentery which is confined to the cystic duct, or slightly beyond it.

The clinical picture is not diagnostic, and indeed of 54 cases described in the literature only 17 were diagnosed as being due to gall-bladder disease.

A case is described in which the pre-operative diagnosis was acute appendicitis, or acute cholecystitis.

Treatment is by emergency surgery.
