Summary
LEPTOSPIROSIS is endemic in the community and is under-diagnosed because of mild infections and atypical presentations. Renal failure is thought to occur in 10 per cent of diagnosed cases.
Eight patients, in whom serological evidence of leptospirosis was later established, were admitted to the Regional Hospital, Galway, during the calendar year 1981. The clinical and laboratory features, course, management and outcome of these patients are discussed. Data suggest that the incidence of severe leptospiral infection in this country may be on the increase.
