Summary

Three patients are presented who underwent Nissen fundoplication for hiatus hernia with reflux. All had undergone pre-operative fibre-optic endoscopy on at least one occasion and no gastric ulcer was seen. At a period in time ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months after the operations new symptoms occurred and endoscopy showed the presence of a gastric ulcer in each case. In 2 patients the ulcer healed after a course of Cimetidine and the third patient underwent partial gastrectomy.
