Summary
A CLINICAL and epidemiological survey of 91 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis notified in 1977-78 in North and West Belfast was made. The annual notification rate was 23.4 per 100,000 population. Of this total, 60% were infective, 67% male and the mean age was 43.8 years with a range from 3 to 90 years. No definite clustering of cases by age, social class or housing conditions was found although from family data 34% of patients either infected or became infected by a relative. Some 51 patients were hospitalised for a variety of reasons; none had drug resistance and only one drug toxicity. Routine MMR detected only 1% of cases. These findings are discussed.
