Salivary progesterone measurements in the normal menstrual cycle

Summary

A HIGHLY sensitive radioimmunoassay for the detection of progesterone in human saliva is described. In a study of random matched samples there was a close correlation between salivary and serum concentrations of hormone (r = 0.82; p<01). During the normal menstrual cycle follicular phase values of salivary progesterone were approximately 100 pmol/l with a subsequent rise to a mean peak luteal phase value of 541 pmol/l. These results and the potential value of saliva as an alternative to conventional body fluids for hormone assays are discussed.
