Summary

Twenty-One patients underwent Sigmomyotomy during a six year period from 1976 to 1981. Details of pre-operative symptoms and findings, Barium Enema results and operative indications were noted. These are compared with operative results. Follow-up was from 2-7 years. The operative mortality was zero. There were minor complications in five patients. Symptomatic relief was good to excellent in 20 patients, particularly in those patients in whom there was pre-operative evidence of obstructive symptoms. It is felt that Sigmomyotomy has a definite role in the management of diverticulosis where there is evidence of secondary stricture formation or where a resection may be deemed hazardous on technical or patient health grounds.
