Infectious glycosuric disease 1963 — Follow-up and further investigations

Summary

THE subsequent course of the 18 patients described in 1964 with particular reference to carbohydrate metabolism is recorded. Three had overt diabetes, four more had diabetic type glucose tolerance curves.

One case with a normal glucose tolerance test showed a diabetic type tolbutamide tolerance test.

The origin of the glycosuria was investigated. Nearly all the patients tested were excreting large amounts of a guanidine derivative, probably creatine, in the urine. Using a screening test, the diacetyl test, a survey was carried out to discover how common the excretion of a guanidine derivative was in a wide variety of conditions. Those which yielded predominantly positive results were chiefly cases of diabetes, conditions closely or remotely related to the diabetic syndrome and the Bornholm syndrome.
