Fractures of the neck of the femur

A prospective study of the early results

Summary

The management of 302 consecutive patients with fractures of the neck of femur was studied to establish the mortality and morbidity. Two hundred and ninety-two patients underwent surgery, 2 died pre-operatively ano 8 were treated conservatively. The early mortality in the prosthetic and internal fixation group was 5.5% and 5.4% respectively. Factors in our series that led to increased mortality and morbidity were advancing age, increasing ASA grading, fracture instability, prolonged immobilisation and chronic brain syndrome in its various forms. No definite pattern emerged to prove the superiority of any anaesthetic technique as too few of our patients died.
