Summary
The effect of dietary fibre on gastroenteropancreatic hormone release was studied in 12 healthy adults. The following results were obtained after high fibre as compared with a low fibre meal: plasma glucose was lower at 60 minutes (p<0.02); plasma glucagon was elevated at 30 and 60 minutes (p<0.01, <0.001 respectively); no changes were observed in V.I.P. or gastrin levels. These data suggest a possible hormonally mediated effect of fibre on colonic motility.
